Piano for Christmastide. These arrangements of classic Christmas carols and songs intentionally eschew the glitz of holiday marketing and return to the intimacy and reflection of awe, wonder, and celebration. Leaning toward older sacred songs of the season, Neil creates an atmosphere of quiet glory and the everyday majesty that can be heard in these historic songs. This collection includes one original composition (Emmanuel - God With Us), and also features Neil’s wife, Cathy Patton on flute and piccolo on three tracks.
“Gloria” is a glorious addition to a discography noted for distinctive themes and melodic and harmonic flavors. All of Neil’s music, and now this wonderful album, capture shards of light from this universal eternal story/mystery we are caught in. I put his emotionally impactful, beautifully crafted and warmly and dynamically played first Christmas album at the top of my must-listen-to holiday recordings of 2025.
I always find it fascinating when an artist can bring something new and original to some of these very time-worn carols, but Neil really dusted them off and made them new again without changing them too much. His expressive playing tells the Christmas stories with a fresh voice overflowing with heart and deep love. An absolutely incredible album!
